We met in high school. He had a girlfriend. I had a boyfriend. I thought he was cute, and the feeling was mutual. As fate would have it, arguments caused both of us to break up with our respective girlfriend/boyfriend at the same time. So, he asked me out, and I said, “Yes.”
Our date was wonderful. We talked, laughed, gazed at the stars. No kissing … after all, it was the first date. There would be more, right?
Once again, fate stepped in and my boyfriend and I got back together. My “one date wonder” and I went back to being friends. He even came to my wedding.
Time passed. My husband and I shared a lot of the same friends – attended the same parties. and remained friends with “the boy I could never forget.”
Eventually, the boy became a man and married too. I was happy for him … at least, I tried to be. Unfortunately(?), his wedded bliss was short lived. At the same time, my marriage was also deteriorating. As hard as I tried to make it work, it just wasn’t. A divorce involving children is never easy. Life as a single parent can also be a challenge.
Maybe it’s true that: “Fate determines who enters your life. Your actions decide who stays.”And perhaps there is no better foundation for true love than friendship. All I know is, no matter how long it takes, when a relationship is “meant to be” … love will find a way.
