Anais Nin was born in 1903 and lived until 1977 – a period in history often associated with the “Ozzie and Harriet” type of family where Mom stayed at home to raise the children and when Dad came home from work the house and the kids are squeaky clean, dinner was ready, and the “little Momma” greeted him at the door with a kiss and a cocktail. Anais did not conform to this stereotype. Perhaps she was ahead of her time.
I think the women of this new millennium desire “a man who compels my strength” – a man who sees her as his equal – who understands that beneath the soft curves lies a core of steel. Women today are not asking to be coddled. Instead, would prefer a man “who makes enormous demands” on her as she does on herself. He also recognizes how very capable she is of meeting the demands she sees as worthy of her effort
The words of Anais Nin ring true for the 21st Century woman. We are not looking for a man who sees us as “naive or innocent.” Today’s woman wants a man who will listen and take interest in what we have to say – a man who will make our relationship a priority and will treat us with the tender loving care we deserve in both big and small ways
Yes, Anais, all these years later most women are still looking for “a man who has the courage to treat me like a woman.” Would you agree?
