Like any other woman, I love it when my sweetie does nice things for me – candy on Valentine’s Day, flowers when I’m feeling down, or a thoughtful gift for my birthday. (Which is coming right up, by the way :o) Those are all wonderful … and very much appreciated.
But I think one of the very best ways to tell if the relationship you’re in is really great is to take a look at what happens when things are less than perfect. You’re too sick to get out of bed. No way can you put on make-up. The house is a mess, but you can’t do anything about it. What does the love of your life do then?
Hopefully, he’s making chicken soup – even if it’s out of a can. Maybe he’s offering to take you to the doctor, or checking your temperature and offering you a cold cloth. For sure you can tell he’s concerned and perhaps even a little worried about you.
Being with a guy when everything is going smooth is easy … for him and for you. But what happens when money is short and the rent’s due? What’s he like if the kid(s) get sick and you have to cancel the plans you made months ago to see your favorite band?
I like what Oprah said. “… when the wedding limo breaks down, [he] is willing to share a seat on the bus.” That’s the kind of guy I want to be with. The man I love.
